  1. I for one, yes much younger than you am glad that we don't have to rebuild alternators, master cylinders and things like that. Great article Gonzo. I agree with you on this article. The problem is training the people who "think" they know what they are doing.
  2. Wow. I have a lift pretty similar to that one. Of course, mine is less than 3 yrs old but I will closely inspect those tomorrow. I don't use the flip up feet very often but that is good to know.
  3. When I was working for Honda a few years ago, they told us to avoid the Nitrogen fills because some of the poor quality systems were not getting all the moisture out causing the TPMS sensors to rust and ruining the sensors. If you didn't know, TPMS was required by the Feds on every car 08 and newer if I am not mistaken so if you haven't invested in the computer software/hardware to work on these systems, you will have to soon enough. I have started looking myself for the best option for me.
  4. Thank you for that one. I cleaned the throttle body on an 03 Altima and had an idle problem. There is a way on that car to mechanically perform the throttle stop position so it would idle correctly. I didn't know I had to do that one
  5. I'm not a beer drinker so I go with the $10 chicken fingers/fries along with the soda that we brought with it
  6. I have been to a brickyard race. AWESOME I am a huge fan Joe and have been to several races and look forward to getting to a few races this year.
  7. Me either that's why I don't do it now. I would much rather work on something that doesn't talk back, well at least now usually.
  8. Yes, it may be less attractive but just as necessary to everyday life as what we do. It was a fantastic way to grow up. Its just a shame that there is no way to even make ends meet anymore by farming unless you are a huge operation. Hm, kinda like what happens in this business some time.
  9. You can easily schedule oil changes or tire rotations since they are usually on a recommended time frame not necessarily mileage related but once you see a customer a few times, you will get the feel for how many miles they are driving and the ones that need to be reminded to do their maintenance.
  10. I agree with xrac. If you want to price something a little lower, do it on the maintenance times since those are more "gravy" money. Don't short change yourself on harder work.
  11. Suberb. Thank You Joe for telling us your heart. I for one have never been hurt by being called a grease monkey. I can understand the pain but I am very proud of what I do and how well I do it. It doesn't matter to me much what other people think or say of me. I do what I do because I love it and get great satisfaction from working on cars. I have worked hard all my life (growing up on a dairy farm with no money helps teach hard work) and because of that my hands have always been dirty.
  12. I worked at two different new car dealership's before starting my own business. One of them had their own loaner cars that they could offer to a customer if the customer needed one. The other dealership had a deal with Budget Car rental (I think) that they used for their loaner cars. You might want to see if there is any car rental places that would give you a deal that way the car is the responsibility of the customer/rental place and not your expense. You could add a small fee to the customer ticket if they wanted a loaner car and you may have to eat some of the cost. You would have to think about the difference of the cost of owning and maintaining your own cars verses just paying a little each time to a rental company and not having to worry about your own car.
  13. I am just north of Nashville within a few miles of I65.
  14. I use an odd number both for my labor rate ($59.97) and my shop supplies amount (8.01%). The example that was used for me was what Walmart does. They won't use even numbers and they also only use 3, 7, 9 price number endings if I can remember properly.
  15. I may find out how good their warranty is this week. I did a Windstar transmission that doesn't seem to shift when cold. I guess I will find out.
  16. That's ok. I won't that against you, at least not much
  17. I am sitting here watching the Daytona 500 and wondering how many nascar fans are on here? I am glad that Nascar is back I have been a Jeff Gordon fan for about 10 yrs and love watching racing. I am also looking forward to getting to a few races this year.
  18. I have done 3 Jasper transmissions in the last 2 months along with 2 used engines and 1 used transmission in the last 2 months by myself. People are keeping the cars longer but its more because they don't have the money to buy new or fix the ones they have. Exactly what Joe said.
  19. Won't let me post it any other way? Works on my end... www.digitalliteracyproject.com/2009/02/14/pc-based-equipment-in-mobile-diagnostics/%#comment-19
  20. Has anyone seen or read this one? PC Based Equipment in Mobile Diagnostics | Digital Literacy Project
  21. I think its a bunch of overhyped crap. Lets see, EVERY car manufacturer has had recalls (remember Firestone/Ford) I think its very disingenuous of the US government that owned 2 car manufactures to make an example of the competition? That would be like me bashing my competition on here just because you made a mistake? Honda had a floormat recall for the same reason about 10 yrs ago? Do you remember that? No because it wasn't made into a bigger deal that it really was.
  22. Since I didn't really have a favorite team it was just good to see a great superbowl. The best playing team won.
  23. So what would you put in a code of Ethics list? I would love to have one that is pretty universal (agreed upon) that I could post on the wall in my shop.
  24. I find it interesting that the government held the owner of the car responsible for what someone else did with their car? That would be like someone holding me responsible if they slip and fall on my property? Oh wait, they can. Or holding me responsible if someone else uses my gun in a crime? Oh wait, they can. Wonderful government intrusion anyone?
  25. I am glad to see it back up as well.
