  1. I will have to look for it I got a copy of your book a few weeks ago but have been so busy I haven't had a chance to read much of it.
  2. I don't get called for the heavy lifting for nothing. The problem is I forgot to listen to my Dad's advice growing up to use my brain instead of my brawn. Now I tend to have to use my brain because my brawn hurts. LOL
  3. Great story. LOL I knew as soon as you mentioned he was a strong man what he was doing to the ignition. I hate to admit it but I have done this type of thing before. Having stronger than normal hands helps in some areas and can get you in trouble at other times.
  4. I have had this problem in the past (several times with Hondas). They would vibrate bad under load. I have come to the conclusion not to ever used remaned axles unless I absolutely have to. I have had much better luck with new axles and I don't have to mess with the cores.
  5. Great articles. I can tell you from personal experience that taking the time to talk to women and explain the repair goes a long way, especially as strange as it sounds, with the older (50+) group. They are the ones that will be the quickest to refer and also return for repairs.
  6. Here in TN, they have an emissions testing regulation every year depending upon which county you live in. Growing up in upstate NY we had a safety inspection. Around here, all they care about is the money and if it "runs" correctly. I think its pretty stupid. So what if the car runs good if nothing else is safe to drive.
  7. Great idea I just have to have the time to do them myself. I can't keep up with the work that I have.
  8. My plans are to own the laptop test equipment to do the programming myself. The factory systems are becoming more and more cost efficient. Honda, Toyota and Nissan systems are less than $1500 for each system and then you have access to the same diagnostic equipment the dealers have.
  9. Welcome to the site. You will learn a lot from the "old" guys on this site I look forward to learning new ideas from you and hopefully be able to offer some input, especially since I did the same thing you did.
  10. LOL. No it wasn't a typo. That was intentional. If you want the younger techs to learn, you must give them the harder work. You might want to be able to "incentive" the top tech to help the younger ones to learn.
  11. If you are paying by the hour, that will work. If you are playing flat rape then you will piss a bunch of people off. This still happens at the dealership that I use to work at. The gravy suckers/loudest bitchers got all the easy work and the rest got stuck with the hard/low paying diagnostic work.
  12. I have very limited photos of my shop and right now would be very embarrassed to show any in its current condition. LOL
  13. I take mine to the salvage yard for the extra cash. I went a few weeks ago and got $230 which paid for my trip we were going on I can't put it in the trash can so I must get rid of it somehow. One trip paid for the tags on the beater truck I use for transporting the trash to the salvage yard.
  14. So, Gonzo, when I get on your site and order my copy of your book, can I get it signed by the author? I am not a coffee drinker but make the tea as sweet as you dare and I am there. Got my copy on order. I look forward to getting to read and laugh at some great stories. Thanks guys Craig
  15. I have used them on several occasions. I do a lot of used replacements (engines, transmissions) but they are the best ones for their warranty. They are not always the cheapest but they usually do have the best products. They are very picky and they deliver to me

    Hi

Welcome from a fellow one man show. I have been going since May 08 so I know your pain I look forward to getting to hear from you and learn some great ideas. Please don't be a stranger.
  17. There are a few other companies around here that would pick up the oil but Safety Kleen was the only one that bothered to call me back. I guess other ones didn't want to be bothered with my small amount. I do get my parts washer serviced by them as well as my anti-freeze picked up by them. The parts washer service costs money bu the rest of the fluid pickups are free to me. I don't have any more room to store waste oil so I am just glad to have a place to get rid of it and have a record of where it went.
  18. Safety Kleen picks up mine. When you have more than 100 gallons they will pick up for free. I am not sure what the cutoff is for how much they take before they actually pay you for it but I won't hit that cutoff anytime soon. I have 3 55 gallon drums and I call them when they are full. Every couple of months for me.
  19. Thank you for the great story in customer satisfaction. My question is this? When you enter a Morton's Steak house there is a certain amount of "expectation" due to the price that you will pay. Do you think that has anything to do with the customer service? How do you think that an experience like this would be beneficial to our line of work? What would do you different?
  20. Xrac, I think his story says 32? Or do we need to ask Joe's wife for the correct number of years?
  21. Where might I find that info Joe? Can you give me a good link to your blog. Would love to read about how someone else did what I am trying to do.
  22. I am actually using this program on my website (well as soon as its up) I will have a new video every week as well as the archives so people can go back through and view them again. Great way to drive more traffic to my website.
  23. Thank you for the advice. I know without a doubt that I will have to have employees to help me. The problem is my garage is at my house (no room for expansion) and this area is so expensive to buy and build/or even rent that I can't justify the cost yet. I don't want to turn wrenches the rest of my life. I love what I do but I don't want to be 30 yrs into this business with nothing to show for it but a busted body and no room for improvement...
  24. I am the only one working here. Its just me to answer the phones, do the work and test drives, and so on. I have a 2 bay garage (one bay with the lift and the other bay with an alignment machine) As far as work, its whatever comes through the door. I do 99% of my work by appointment because I am the only one doing the work.
