  1. As a shop owner, I feel that I am responsible for my technicians. Stuff gets broken and unless it was just plain abuse, I cover the costs of the repairs. If braking things is a common occurence it may be time to have a discussion with the technician about this or start looking for a new technician. As far as wrong diagnosis this is a little different story. I have taken parts off vehicles when they didn't fix the repair. I don't feel that its appropriate to charge a customer for parts that don't fix the problem. I had one this week that I ate about $100 in parts because they didn't fix the problem. This customer is one of my most loyal over the years so sometimes I feel its just a part of doing business.
  2. Yes if they left on their own. If I fired them, it would be a different story. I was a rehire after what I thought would be a good job change. It wasn't and I was very glad that my former employer would rehire me.
  3. Welcome to the site. Its great to have you here. There are a lot of seasoned shop owners with a lot of good information. Don't be afraid to ask. I personally have never heard of Management Success. I have learned a lot from either Elite Worldwide http://www.eliteworldwidestore.com/ or classes and training by ATI http://www.autotraining.net/
  4. I charge more labor because I don't make any money on the mark up of the parts sale. I don't charge a higher labor rate, I just charge more than the posted time. I don't have this happen much myself because I discourage it. Have had to deal with wrong part, doesn't work, didn't fix the problem, ect. This ends up being wasted time on your part.
  5. If this is your first attempt into business ownership in general, look up and see if there is a local Score chapter in your area. http://www.score.org/ They offer several excellent classes for specifically starting a business and the investment in the class cost is very minimal and the material that they give you is worth the cost you pay for the class.
  6. So sad but so true.
  7. Welcome to the site Pete. There are a lot of seasoned shop owners on this site that are glad to answer questions. Please don't hesitate to ask questions.
  8. January was the best month on record for me. This month is the best February I have ever had. Need the trend to continue.
  9. I have an Oreilly's and Advance within a mile of the shop. The vast majority of the parts come from Oreillys. In fact, I am probably the biggest account in our town that Oreilly's has (pretty proud of that fact for being one of the youngest shops in the town). The guys at oreilly's send me a lot of business and a take every opportunity to return the favor.
  10. The mild winter has been AWESOME We had 12.5" of snow by this time last year and we have had .2" this year. One of the reasons I moved south from upstate NY. The mild winter here has been good for me since the business didn't drop off at all like it usually does.
  11. Watching this with interest. I have so much work right now for the 2 of us that I really can't offer anything else but its a great idea to keep in the back of my mind.
  12. Great idea. I did something similar to this on my facebook page but never thought about doing it email blast style. Will probably do that today if I get the chance.
  13. Very nice write up. Thank you Joe for helping the rest of us strive to be the business you have made.
  14. Welcome to the site. As a fellow ex Honda dealership technician now owner, its good to have you here.
  15. For cars that have the automatic oil change intervals (ie. your example) I am telling customers to use this interval. The PCM is monitoring how this vehicle is driven and it knows when to change the oil. 6-8k on the newer Honda's isn't a problem and in fact my Dad will go over 8k on his oil changes. Most new Toyota products say 5k on their severe oil change.
  16. I had someone give me a bad review one time on Google that had never even been into my shop. I was going to respond but I left it alone a few weeks later I had several customers respond and blast this person for a bad review of a place that they plainly stated in their review they had never even visited. This review has since been taken down but I check mine on a regular basis for this reason.
  17. We are loving the mild winter here. Its been good for my business. I will have the best January ever.
  18. So the tire repair was done a whole year before and the repair place is still held liable? There must me a LOT more to that story. Was the tire properly maintained? Did it have the correct amount of air? Was it properly rotated? Can anyone tell me where I am supposed to find the industry standard tire repair guidelines? I have never even heard of them and I have been in this business 15 years?
  19. I never allow this except for close personal friends that I know will get me the money. Otherwise, that is what credit cards are for.
  20. Xrac, that is excellent for us I hear people almost daily complain that they won't work on their cars anymore since everything went computers. LOL I tell them I am glad cars went to computers. Gives me something to do.
  21. Make sure you have a website that shows up on the top of google searches. This takes some time but well worth the investment of the time. Make sure you have your google map places marked and verified. This can be done just by googling your business name and making sure you add the pictures and information so people can find it. I have also found that having a great relationship with your auto parts store employees is very good for business. Again, this takes a little time but in my small town there are 6 shops and I get a lot of work referred to me above the other shops.
  22. Dang. I'm with you. That makes me nervous just watching it. LOL
  23. Welcome to the site. As a big honda/acura fan we need more like you around
  24. Laughed out loud with #11. Most of the time I have lost the screwdriver is when I get into the vehicle and it sticks to the top of the door frame. I had two screwdriver's in my pocket (Cornwell and Snapon Reps handed them out for Christmas) this week and they stuck together one on top of the other to the door when I got in. LOL
