  1. I saw this. Anyone say more government intrusion?
  2. 70's? Ha. how about now. Proper work management takes a manager who is willing to deal with the crybaby gravy sucker and willing to make sure that the work is balanced. That very thing is one of the reasons I am not sure I will pay flat rate as my shop grows. Because normally the gravy suckers can't do anything else but screw up real diagnostic work.
  3. Great tip. This works most of the time. In this area (middle TN) I don't have to deal with that often due to this area not using salt on the roads. It makes auto repair so much more enjoyable when you don't have to deal with rust. I don't even own a blue tip wrench
  4. Doesn't work for me but it doesn't hurt to make sure that your information is up to date and accurate on both sites.
  5. I have really struggled with is concept myself. Do I give a low price just to get them as a customer or do I just give my "normal" price, the one where I make the margins I need and let the "price shoppers" go down the street. I personally decided that I will give the price I need to make money and if I lose that customer, most of the time, it wasn't a customer that I wanted coming through my door anyway. I don't really want a shop full of cars from customers that will only fix things that are broken, when they are broken. I want customers that are willing to bring me their cars for everything.
  6. Is the compressor still engaged when it quits cooling? I am not sure directly about the hybrids but I have done a bunch of a/c compressor clutches on Honda products. Also, check the compressor clutch relay as well. (can't remember if the hybrid system works the same or not)
  7. I have had great experiences with Elite. What I have used from them is their training information on their website. Very valuable information. Bob Cooper does an excellent job. I can't speak for their mentoring program much but our own Joe Marconi (staff on this site) works for them. He would be the one that could give you very valuable information.
  8. Welcome to the site. I like you did the same basic thing. Would love to be able to give some advice. Look forward to getting to hear from you. The "older" shop owners on this site have a lot of excellent advice. Make sure you search this site as there are a lot of posts that I am sure will answer your questions.
  9. Following this one for interest. This has been a debate for me for a while now.
  10. I am a firm believer in making sure the work we perform under the hood is clean. Because of this we go through a lot of Oreilly's brake cleaner as I have found that this seems to work the best. The down side is that its expensive. What do you guys use in your shops for this kind of cleaning?
  11. Interesting article that I just read. Explains a lot. http://blog.jmcautomotiveequipment.com/4-important-questions-you-need-to-ask-before-you-invest-in-a-car-lift/?goback=.gde_3321805_member_111692620
  12. So who will be responsible when DIY does it wrong? Are they going to sue the auto repair places for selling them the kit?
  13. I personally have carried my Master Certification with my L1 advanced for more than 10 yrs now. I initially got them out of pure pride but now I know as the shop owner how important it is to have these certifications on my arm as well has hanging in my shop. Thank you for the great story Gonzo.
  14. The problem I can tell you Joe is most of the "techs" graduating from these places I wouldn't hire to wash my car. Being fairly close to Nashville Auto Diesel college the dealership that I worked at for a long time use to hire a lot of students for oil lube techs while they were going to school. This is how I got started. In the class I graduated from 15 yrs ago there were only about 1/2 the class that I would even let touch my car. My experience says most of them are looking to get out of the house and party not actually learning to start a career in the automotive world.
  15. Great info Joe. I thought about doing one of those this month but had way too much going on to pull it off. Thinking about doing one of these events in Oct.
  16. I saw that was available when I signed up for the Mitchell SE last year. I declined it because I didn't want my customer records to be public knowledge. I just didn't feel right about.
  17. Ha. That's funny.
  18. Welcome to the site. Its good to have you here. Don't be a stranger. We all have something to offer each other.
  19. That is just my gross sales. I haven't looked at my net profit yet. Still working on that number. Probably less than last year which is disappointing. Making more money and bringing home less.
  20. How are your business numbers this year over last year now that the first quarter is done? I just checked my numbers and I am up by 36% over last year. Explains why I am exhausted. I just need to find out exactly where all that extra money is going. LOL
  21. My choice is either Advance auto Parts or Oreilly Auto parts. Nearest Carquest is over 20 miles away and the napa is about 10 miles. The Oreilly's has been the best to me. The relationship goes a long way to cover any problems and since I spend more money at that store than anyone else, it also gives a few advantages.
  22. Sounds like a great seminar but I will be sitting on a beach in FL on vacation that weekend
  23. I second what Joe said. As a young shop owner I have learned a lot on this site. Don't be afraid to ask questions and give your opinion.
  24. I have used the the Wearever Gold on several occassions. Wasn't too impressed. Several applications the brakes were noisy. I have had the same problem with the Wagner brand as well. I am still trying several brands but so far have been happy with Oreilly's Brake best select brand.
  25. Wow Joe. What kind of program do you use to figure that out? I have enough trouble just getting my operating numbers correct.
