  1. I'm with Jeff. Love my Mitchell1. Costs 260 a month and this program not only lets me do my invoicing, parts ordering and repair section but pricing as well. An ABSOLUTE must have. I also have Identifix for any strange problems. Great tool for some easy diagnostics.
  2. i hear that quite often. Normally they will buy we we recommend. Most customers have been burned by a shop in the past so I don't have a problem giving an estimate before work is performed if the customer wants one.
  3. Would much rather take the 105 degree heat over the cold anyday. In our 3 man shop we go through 3-4 large bottles of water everymonth. One of the reasons I moved south Also not having to deal with rust is a very nice thing.
  4. Joe, I can tell you working for Honda if we were turning rotors under warranty, Honda made us turn them on the car. The theory behind the on car lathe is a good one. It turns the rotors to match any runnout in the hub or wheel bearing. Makes the rotor much truer to the vehicle. Most people may not ever notice but it works the best. I wish I could afford one myself.
  5. Welcome to the forum. Good to have you here. Look forward to getting to hear some of your insight.
  6. I charge $10 which is the same I charge to mount and balance a tire anyway. Maybe should charge more but that price has worked for me and not had any kickback.
  7. I recently started repairing all my tires the way NY state just passed their information. I pulled in the info off one of the tire magazine websites that I use.
  8. I had a new tech his second week here crunch a front bumper into a hitch ball while pulling the car into the shop. Stuff happens.
  9. I can tell you that I have been there. Customers that are worried about price (like your example) you don't want. I just lost a big cat converter job because I wasn't willing to budge on the price. I need to be able to keep my doors open and pay my employees. Don't lower your price just to get business, it will only cost you in the long run.
  10. Welcome to the site. Good to have you here
  11. Its good to have you back. Don't be a stranger
  12. As a fellow Honda shop I can tell you that EVERY dealer in our area except one sells at above list price. They matrix their parts. The dealerships have to since their overhead is much higher than yours. Call your area dealers looking for a price on a specific part (don't tell them who you are) and see what the prices go at. Also, if you do not use WorldPac, you need to sign up with them. They sell a lot of the OEM manufacture parts at less than I can get them at the dealership a lot of the time. Also you will need to mark dealer parts up more because most dealerships only give you 25-30% off list anyway and I can tell you that isn't enough for me.
  13. Just had one kick my butt a few weeks ago. 98 Dodge caravan, overheating really fast. Had new radiator, so only thing left was the headgasket. Tore the engine apart, did head gasket and you guessed it. Didn't fix it. Found the "new" radiator had a broken baffle inside the radiator. Learned an expensive lesson there.
  14. I was recently "forced" to move my business and had to come up with cash really fast. I was actually amazed that I got a SBA loan from the government for a very small amount every month. It was a 10k loan and payment is just over $100 a month. I would look into that.
  15. I had one a few months ago that we bleed and bleed and adjusted the rear brake shoes up and everything. It was a 94 S10 Blazer with 60k. Grandma's cream puff. The customer stated that the master cylinder had been changed so we didn't replace it to start with but after several days of fighting with it and replacing the ABS module, we replaced the "new" master cylinder with a brand new one and the problem went away.
  16. That would be a half hour for finding the fuel smell. LOL I had one like this a few weeks ago. Very bad vibration while driving. Took the car out and promptly came right back in. Put up on lift and only tire that hadn't been changed was so badly worn it was coming apart. We had a great laugh over this one.
  17. My shop is growing and I need to make/write a specific employee handbook. Does anyone have a copy of their handbook that you would be willing to share so I can read through one and make sure I have all my basis covered? Email to me if you would like. [email protected] Thank you for your help. I highly value the input you guys have on this site.
  18. I have a car here now worked on by on of those "A" mechanics. Junk Kia needs an engine. A good friend so I quoted him a great price. He didn't want to spend it so his son and a "friend" decided they could do it for less. The "friend" after he got the engine out decided he wanted more money so they brought it back to me with no engine or transmission in it and want me to put it back together again. Mind you I didn't take the engine out, I have never put an engine in one of these cars. Should be fun. lol
  19. I use it. Its part of the Demandforce marking program that I use. Those that use text messaging love it. I can even send text messages through my Demandforce which is pretty cool. It lets me confirm appointments a few hours before which most people look at for reminders.
  20. This is one of the reasons to make sure your charging enough for your parts and labor to cover things that happen like this. I know Oreilly's where I get most of my parts from will pay labor claims if the part fails in their warranty time. Its not much but at least I can pay the tech for the repair and not have to eat that part.
  21. Looking forward to spending time with my kids and wife. So Blessed with a wonderful wife and three small children.
  22. I have used Mitchell1 (wasn't all that impressed at the time) I have heard that they have been greatly improving. I currently use Demandforce. A little more expensive than I would like to spend but the email, scheduling and text messaging features are really nice. I need to spend more time really using Demandforce to its full potential. I have looked at and will probably try Customer Link. They have a pretty amazing customer program that is really cool for contacting specific customers.
  23. Ha. I hate to admit I have done this myself. LOL I think we all have to install a radio or two wrong before we figure out that most cars don't use the stupid illumination wire from the radio.
  24. Welcome to the site. Its good to have you here. Be sure to ask questions. The seasoned shop owners on here have a lot of information that they are willing to share.
  25. Been a very long week with my tech being out. Need more help around here.
