  1. Wonderful story Joe. The memories of my father that I have are out in a field planting corn, baling hay, tending livestock, or he and I building a wire fence. The best memories are walking across a field where the dew covered grass was grown up nearly waist high with me with a cane pole in one hand and a can of earthworms in the other as he and I made our way to a farm pond when he took me fishing.
  2. One of the problems with this industry is every person who ever worked at Walmart Tire and Lube Expresss or some place similar for two months tells everyone they are mechanics or technicians. They tell people to ignore CELs and of course the long term consequences aren't good. You should see the mess of silicone we are having to clean off of every seal on an engine we are working on. The guy must have used 6 whole tubes and every seal was leaking.
  3. Gonzo that is hilarious. One of your best. Thursday we had a car dropped off because the owner wanted us to check an engine noise. We keep it all day and tried it several times but never heard one engine noise. At 5:00 I gave him the news and then he tells me that he only hears the engine noise at 20MPH. I keep it until Friday and we replaced a hub bearing but should have charged extra for owner stupidity.
  4. Most of the time it does not work out. I have two guys now that I have rehired. So far so good.
  5. Jeff, you are making me hungry. Am I invited?
  6. Joe I ain't much at barbecuing but I like charcoal hands down over gas.
  7. Ask the techs working for you now who they know. Ask your outside salesmen, parts vendors, tool guys, etc. I haven't had much luck n recent years from newspaper ads or Career Builder.
  8. I had a tech who use to work for me logging on to Alldata and Identifix from a shop he went to. I changed passwords and shut him out.
  9. Joe will this ver change where we can charge what we shold for battery installation or diagnosis"
  10. Puttting up the flag. http://www.billcook.net/puttin-up-the-flag.html
  11. I think the 15K to split the meter is a pretty big consideration. How much are you paying per month?
  12. BOB parts make a fairly routine job really challenging because you have a hard time sometimes convincing yourself the new part is bad.
  13. God bless all of our veterans and their families both those living and deceased. Please prayer for my hero Army Ranger Service Manager who has stage IV lung cancer. He is my employe but also my friend.
  14. There are just so many misinformed people from the customer to the guy who is suppose to be a technician.
  15. You can't fix stupid. Let him waste his time and throw parts at it until he gives up. Driving a 94 car with the corrosion you have up north????
  16. Healthwise early detection and treatment is usually more successful and often cheaper. In the automotive industry sooner is always more successfyl and ALWAYS less expensive in my opinion. I try to have empathy with my customers but to teach them that sooner is ALWAYS cheaper than later. This is especially true with running problems and brakes. The consumer today needs to also learn that only a fool or a trained professional should mess with the electrical systems on the modern car. Even something as simple as changing a battery done improperly can lead to major problems on some vehicles.
  17. We have installed dealer shoes and noise dampeners on the drums. So far so good.
  18. I will sell a used tire occasionally when I get a hold of a good one. Trouble is not one in ten that I remove is worth reinstalling on a different vehicle. The problem with the used tire guys around here is they will take a tire if it has good tread no matter how old it is. People are buying those used tires and then coming to me for alignments because they have pulls and vibration. Guess where those come from?
  19. We are going to see California regs in all 50 states before long.
