  1. Newspaper is no longer a viable marketing media in my opinion. I have read the local newspaper for over 40 years and I am about to drop my subscription. The paper is half the size it once was and 90% of what I read in it I have already seen on line. I think digital is where our ad dollars should be going.
  2. I do not think there is anything you can do about it other than fire the guy which you have already done. I had a similar situation last winter. It was horrible.
  3. We didn't get the whole story there did we. My experience is journalist tend only get about 60 percent of the story right.
  4. I would at least have them pay 25%. My service manager is single and will make $50-$60K this year. But he recently thought a health insurance quote of $250 per month is too high. However, I personally pay about $600 a month for myself alone. Many of our younger employees just have no clue on health insurance cost. In this situation he is divorced, living single, and his two boys are on his ex-wife's insurance.

  6. After finding and reading a lot of on line jack reviews I bought the Hein Werner HA93652 3 ton. Pricey but one of the last two US made jacks. With shipping and everything it cost me $465. I did not buy the NORCO because I found out it was made in China. I spent a extra $125 and got this one. While reasearching this I found that the Snap-On Jack I currently have is really a Hein Werner 2 ton. It has been a great jack so I also purchased a seal kit for that jack and new rear casters for about $90.
  7. No heat usually is something like this. About 70% of the time the coolant is low due to whatever reason. You fix that you fix the heat. 25% of the time the heater core is restricted or clogged. About 5% of the time it will be something like thermostat, water pump giving poor circulation, etc. When my tech comes to me and tells me that we need to just replace a thermostat to fix the heat I am usually surprised.

  9. Gonzo, I love this article! This is a pet peeve of mine. I do not understand how people can be so ignorant. The general public seems that a new thermostat is a fix for any type of no heat/over heating type problem but my experience is 9 times out of ten it has nothing to do with a thermostat. People are sometimes amazed that something as simple as a new radiator cap and a gallon of coolant can fix a no heat problem.
  10. What is the difference in the Autel 401 and the 501 or 601?
  11. We are going to buy a couple of new floor jacks in either a 3 or 3 1/2 ton size. I am consider Norco. Does anyone have a good or bad opinion? I have owned OTC and Snapon jacks before.
  12. A recent article in the Dominion Post reported that a woman, Anne Maynard, has sued Wellington Hospital, saying that after her husband had surgery there, he lost all interest in sex. A hospital spokesman replied: "Mr. Maynard was admitted for cataract surgery. All we did was correct his eyesight."
  13. It will! You can't keep a good man down!

  15. You need to put a dollar figure on the value of equipment and inventory. You need to also find out how much is the lease on the building? Is the lease assumable or do you have to renegotiate with the landlord?
  16. It sounds like the only thing this shop really has to offer is location if you have to replace most of the equipment, completely renovate, and business is slow. You are not going to acquire any lasting help if the current employees are 60 and 67. Is the location worth spending the money it will take to acquire it? If you hold off and the owner cannot sell it he will shut the business down and sell the property and equipment piece by piece which may be a much cheaper way to acquire it. It sounds like all that you have here is the building and land. Good will is going to be minimal. Not an especially attractive situation.
  17. In our early years we paid 100% of the employee but we had a group of guys who were young and didn't seem to care, we experienced a lot of turn over and rates keep going up. We finally reached a point that we discontinued offering it and haven't since. 90% of the employees we have had have either been on their wives insurance or didn't care if they had any.
  18. You certainly wear multiple hats.
  19. I think it is better for them to have some skin in the game otherwise they undervalue what you are providing.
  20. Joe, I totally agree. Quality continues to slide in my opinion.
  21. Joe, I read the article last week and thought it was real good.
  22. No we sweat it out in the summer but we have great air circulation the way our shop is positioned.
  23. There is not a perfect way to do this but whatever is used will have to be agreed upon by the team members. You could try to document the total hours each member works and than pay each one as a percentage of the total. For example if there are 4 team members and three work 40 hours and one works 25 actual hours the three techs would earn 27.58% of the total and the fourth guy would be at 17.24%. This is just one way.
  24. You might consider writing him up and documenting his wrong diagnosis.
