  1. You can talk to the area Hunter and Coats service guys and sometimes find used equipment. Ebay and Craigslist is another source. If you are looking for new it is hard to beat the price of the on line places like Tool Topia, Toolwarehouse.net, and NTX. Coats is running some rebates.
  2. I am better but now great. Now my service manager has this nasty stuff.

  3. I stock a few common high moving numbers. Usually less than 100. We have overnight delivery from four large wholesalers and in town I can pickup stock from four different sources. Where most of our tire sales come from is cars in our shop for other service and we see the need and speak to them about it.
  4. We are installers for Tire Rack, Tire Easy, and were for Discount Tire Direct before Discount Tire came to town. We pick up some addition work and customers from this. We have three sets of Tire Rack Tires this week. We gain these customers without advertising dollars. The money we pick up from this alone would pay for a balancer and changer in a few years without anything else. If you have a balancer and changer you can pick up some tire sales if you are interested. We have a Discount Tire, Sams Club, Walmart, Pep Boy, and an independent within 3/4 miles of us and still do $10K plus monthly. Is that enough compeition?
  5. Having used all three at various times. I fixed a shifting issue in a Chevrolet Lumina that I had with Lucas. My service manager with 20 years plus experience swears by TransX and I have also used BG with good results. We dropped BG because of service issues with our rep not due to the product.
  6. Missed two days with stomach flu! Caught it from one of my guys. Nasty stuff!! Stomach is still uneasy but I am keeping food down.

  7. Just look for the guy carrying a golf club!!
  8. We had a Toyota Corolla towed in for a busted tie rod end that we replaced. When it came off the truck it was running like crap but we were not asked to address the running issue. The girl's dad called yesterday saying the car wasn't running bad before. It is a constant battle with customers who think you own their car if you touch one thing on it. Last week we did a front hub on an older Pontiac Transport. Would you believe while we were pulling it in an out a plastic heater hose elbow busted and started leaking like an open faucet (we never even came close to that part of the car). Luckily this is a A list customer who understood and was glad it happened in our shop and not on his family out on the road.
  9. I have also always enjoyed taking things apart! However, putting them back together was always harder for me.
  10. Welcome! I don't know much about dismantling other than buying used parts.
  11. Rambiss don't be suprised if you have another chance to buy this business later if you are still interested. The owner may have to learn that your first offer is often your best offer.
  12. Have you ever had the feeling that this would be the best solution?
  13. Many of the extended warranty companies are little more than legal thieves.
  14. All of the warranty companies out of Pennsylvania seem to be like that.
  15. Did she have it diagnoses at another shop or was it at someplace like Auto Zone? If you are uncomfortable just have her sign a disclaimer ahead of time that you did not do the diagnosis and you are not responsible if the repair does not solve the problem.
  16. Start running an ad on craigslist and start interviewing. Also start talking to people in the business and ask them who the best tech is they know. You may have to steal a tech away from another shop.
  17. It doesn't sound like a bad plan to me. Just make sure you have a good lease purchase agreement.
  18. We do lots of head gaskets with zero problems. Of course we have heads planed and pressure tested. We had a transmission fail on a test drive once and I did buy it from the owner. Bought it for $200 and fixed it up. Drove it for three years and sold it. I made $3,000 on that deal.
  19. I agree. I have struggled with finding techs for the last four years. I have the best group I have ever had but had to bring back two guys who use to work for me to do it.
