  1. Using Mudlick with coupons is kinda like gold mining. You have to spend a lot of money and move a lot if dirt but if you do you can find some nuggets.
  2. We use a lot of those plastic zip ties and just in case I have a role of plumber's wire. Not for proper repairs but to keep stuff out of the way when it is all broken up.
  3. Care to share a tire matrix.
  4. Let me guess the sizes you stock: 235/75/15 and 205/70/15???????
  5. Joe I agree. I believe that the acquisition by Advanced of Carquest will only result in the destruction of a dependable vendor for the DIFM businesses.
  6. I am not wild about either. Playing with them I would change them around. Of these I like the first. 1. Neighbors you can trust Pomp's Tire and Service 2. Pomp's knows tires and service and you should know Pomp's.
  7. $58,404 charged in March 2015 cost me $908.45. That is about 1.56% total cost and no contract. The processing is done through Newtek. Talk to Paul Braden at 248-939-8000. Tell him I told you to call. He can fix you up. Paul calls his operation Detroit Bank Card. I have always just talked with him by phone. I got a hold of him through my Carx area manager. You can email him at [email protected]. I have used him for about 7 years and have never had one problem. Paul just sent me a new chip card machine that cost me $0. I will warn you that Paul can tell you more than you want to know.
  8. This free Autozone Diagnosis is a real problem. There is a large segment of the population who think that that is all there is to diagnosis. I had one of those people this week and when I tried to explain otherwise to him it was no use. He knew more than I did.
  9. Welcome! Good to have you. That is a common complaint of one man shop operations.
  10. I have used these guys and theirs are only about $0.06 each when ordering 1000. I think the quality is o.k. http://www.autoshopexpress.com/service-reminder-stickers.html
  11. Business is down for the CARX's and are business is flat. Our car count is down even though we have picked up one large fleet. We have three cars listed for sale on craigslist ($2900, $2100, and $1500) and haven't gotten one call in two weeks. I think things are worse than the media is talking about.
  12. Gonzo here is the key words for me in this article, "mechanics are basing their skill levels on cars from years past". Every time I get an applicant for a job they tell me all the stuff they have done on cars and know how to do. It is always old technology nuts and bolts. It is never new technology computers, scanners, and diag skills. Good article.
  13. Do you know what to teach her? How is she at computers, learning, and business ideas?
  14. It might make me rethink what I was doing! However, this was only one isolated case but they had my service writer so frustrated that I figured it was easier to replace a customer than a service writer.
  15. We had one customer who did that on a regular basis. They had us do some things but most was done elsewhere. We simply told them we did not want to work on their car anymore.
  16. My son does not work in the automotive business and has shown no interest in ever taking it over. He is a union plumber by trade who current works maintenance for the local school corporation. My son has a reputation for being a tremendous worker and a skilled tradesman. Everyone who knows him and works with him speaks highly of him. Guess who is the one person in the whole world that he has trouble getting along with????? Yep! It is dear old dad. Go figure. For some reason with some father and sons that is a dynamic that can be difficult to overcome.
  17. . We have a Midas owner here who is as you have described. They are very reluctant to invest into the business or so I am told. The remark from the VAST salesman was unsolicited.
  18. Phynny, I have followed your post and I know you are both a good business man and a good technician. These two things are not mutually exclusive but it is a challenge to be both.
  19. This is a tough business period. I think it is easier for a non-technican to work on his business not in his business (think Emyth). A non-technician has to invest more money and either succeed big or fail big. We invested $750,000 on the startup 17 years ago. The problem technicians have is growing their business beyond the startup. They initially succeed on their own technical ability and hard work but are too use to doing it all themselves. They have a harder time delegating and managing. For example a salesman with Vast MAM Software told me last week he liked dealing with the Car-X franchise owners because almost no one is a technician and are most all business people. He said the nontechnical owners understand investing in the business whereas technician owners had a harder time getting past the cost of their software rather than seeing the productivity and control it could bring.
