  1. Maybe you should have tried something like how about we do the alignment at half price then. That works in these situations most of the time.
  2. Jamie, congratulations. I have a neighbor about 1/2 mile away who started the same way. He was a dealer mechanic and built a shop at home. He started moonlighting, moved to working half time at the dealer and then went full time. After about 5 years he built a nice modern shop over in town.
  3. I had a college education and about 20 years of experience running other businesses. I had never worked on cars or been employed in a car related business. During a moment of temporary insanity I decided to purchase an auto repair franchise and open an auto business. We started from the ground up buying land, building a building, equipping it, and hiring employees. We started as an exhuast and brakes franchise but quickly found out that limited model would not work. After about two years we switched to a full service model. It was 5 plus years before we did not lose money.
  4. Wednesday we had a Hyundai Santa Fe towed in. Our diagnosis was out of gas. We could have sent the car on its way. Instead we noticed it was at 106,000 miles. We recommended Timing belt kit wth water pump, maintenance tuneup, and oil change. We could have shipped the car down the road with ten dollars worth of gas and a half hour labor. Instead we have a thirteen hundred dollar ticket. Opportunity is what we make of it. Our November sales have been strong. We have already exceeding 2015 numbers for the same month.
  5. Happy Thanksgiving to all my wonderful friends on ASO. My life is richer through the interactions we share here.
  6. How has this worked for you and how successful are you with capturing email addresses.
  7. A guy looked at a Corvette the other day and said I wonder how many people could have been fed for the money that sports car cost. The other guy replied I am not sure, it fed a lot of families in Bowling Green, Kentucky who built it, it fed the people who make the tires, it fed the people who made the components that went into it, it fed the people in the copper mine who mined the copper for the wires, it fed people in Decatur IL. at Caterpillar who make the trucks that haul the copper ore. It fed the trucking people who hauled it from the plant to the dealer and fed the people working at the dealership and their families. BUT,... I have to admit, I guess I really don't know how many people it fed. That's the difference between capitalism and the welfare mentality. When you buy something, you put money in people's pockets, and give them dignity for their skills - versus, when you give someone something for nothing, you rob them of their dignity and self-worth. Capitalism is freely giving your money in exchange for something of value. Socialism is taking your money against your will and shoving something down your throat that you never asked for.
  8. Gonzo this is an example of some electirical work we had on a vehicle today. We didn't do the work. Have you ever saw a light switch used for a toggle switch in a car? Don't ask me what it was hooked up to I was afraid to ask.
  9. This is my Uncle Wilbur Lawrence my mom's brother. He was in Korea during the Korean War with the Airforce. My mother tells me he hit back from Korea on the day I was born. HE was my mother's youngest brother.
  10. How well are you prepared for retirement or how well are you planning. Are all of your assets tied up in the business. I will be 64 years old in December so this is an important topic to me.
  11. The election results shows how out of touch the Democrats, the Republicans, the Media, and the Polsters were with the reality of many Americans lives. That someone as controversial as Trump could be elected with the opposition he faced shows how fed up with the way things are many Americans are. Personally I am cautiously optimistic. I think all that any of us on this forum desire is the chance to live free and to profit from the work of our hands and sweat of our brow without being told everything we can and cannot do or to have what we labor for all taken away.
  12. Arguing politics is like arguing with your wife. You may be convinced you are right but you can never convince her.
  13. Here is a pious thought on this: PROVERBS 17:14-New International Version. Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.
  14. http://www.lifehealthpro.com/2016/11/04/have-business-will-retire-or-maybe-not?eNL=5820cd0e150ba0855e006dcc&utm_source=LHPro_LifeInsuranceInsider&utm_medium=EMC-Email_editorial&utm_campaign=11072016 When it comes to retirement planning, one might think that small business owners are among those better prepared for their golden years than rank-and-file workers. Alas, that’s not necessarily the case for a solid majority of the entrepreneurial class.
  15. When you live in a smaller city you spend a lot of time hunting parts and waiting on parts to come in. I do not have a solution.
  16. Skm, employers look for experience, skill, attitude and stability. You have all of that and more and can probably get hired at any shop in the land. It would just depend upon whether they can afford you and what you want to make. The health insurance thing is hurting us all. My premiums just went from $523 to $674 with a $6,500 deductible. The ACA, i.e. OBumma Care is a great deal for all if us working people. 🙄😡
  17. Joe locally the former entire crew of the Carquest store in an adjoining town were all hired by a local company and opened up in the former Carquest location as a NAPA store. It seems like Advances purchase of Carquest was really a dumb move to me.
