  1. How is your weather? In case you think it is cold where you are. I just got off the phone with a friend living in northern North Dakota near the Canadian border. He said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is dropping way below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare. He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.
  2. DewayneP, has given good advice. A few additional pieces of equipment are a brake lathe, alignment machine, roll around torch, maybe a mig welder, battery/charging system tester, used oil tank, some shelving but not too much, bench grinder, ac machine, coolant flushing machine, transmission flushing machine, brake rotor and drum micrometers, good floor jack, jack stands, engine stand, engine hoist, and battery charger. When we opened we bought a used forklift which we used for 9 years until it laid down on us. It was very useful but not a necessity so I did not replace it.
  3. GM's New Engine Oil: Use It Or Else! http://autos.aol.com/article/gm-engine-oil/ http://motoroilbible.com/blog/general-motors-dexos-motor-oil-spec/ Have any of you saw a 2011 GM vehicle yet for an oil change?
  4. I will just say this about partners in my experience. One partner is one too many. As far as market size for a franchise (typically 6-8 bays) Car-x likes to have a market of at least 80,000.
  5. It is hard to get replies during the day since we are all working. I work about 50-60 hours most weeks.
  6. Joe, how many part numbers do you carry and how many dollars would you say that you have tied up in inventory. Do you sell new TPMSs with every tire sale?
  7. You also have potential to be a good humorous author and personality. Work on it and you can be the "Jerry Clower" of the automotive business. You do remember Jerry Clower don't you?
  8. I had my guys all watch this video and told them from now on when we install two tires we will always install them on the rear.
  9. This is exactly what I am talking about. I think that the best tires should go on the front because in the event of a blow out on the rear the car can still be steered but we are opening ourselves up to lawsuits if we do that.
  10. Joe, I think from a driving stand point I would prefer to put the two new tires on the front of front wheel drive vehicles and on the rear of rear wheel drive. However, because it is said to be a safety issue (whether true or not) I think we have to install them on the rear. I don't know that I really believe that but if I install two new tires on the front of a car and they have a wreck and a smart lawyer decides to sue me I think I lose hands down no questions asked.
  11. Joe, I like those words and I think you are correct.
  12. Isn't that the truth. Everyone right now is promoting internet offers. I get this from Groupon and the local TV, Radio, and Newspaper people. They want you to offer soimething at like half price or a deep discount. You don't pay anything up front for the advertising. They sell the offers and keep anywhere from all the money to 50% of the money for the advertising. Here is the way I calculate it. I let them sell 50 oil changes at $19.95. I am giving up $8 ($400) by my discount and when they keep 50% of the revenue I give up another $10 ($500). It seems like a real expensive way to advertise to me. I have tried to figure out a way to use it that makes sense to me but the only thing I come up with is that it is good for the advertisers.
  13. My 2010 was really strong. Our sales were up overall about 8%. My goals for the coming year are to improve our margin and to to grow our sales by at least 5%. I am looking at some direct mail programs that we have not used before.
