  1. We use a modis ultra for quick easy stuff but have GM and Ford oem tools and will add Chrysler by the end of the year.
  2. Don't feel to bad, I personally just FUBARED timing belt. I didnt bend the valves I broke them and ran them in to pistons to look like mushrooms. best part is the customer was supposed to drive to the lower 48 with a military transfer. I gave him two options. 1 I can give you fair market value for your car, and you can go buy a new one. 2 I can fix your car, you can change your travel with the military and fly out ( it would not cost him anything) and I will ship your vehicle to you ( military pays for it I just need a power of a attorney). That sucked, thankfully it was a older Hyundai and old 6k he sold me the car and is off to buy another.
  3. This is a BIG one to me because we go through 100'S of gallons a year with winterization season and changing all of the ratings to -60. JUST MATCH THE FRIGGEN COLOR, IF YOU CANT ADD MORE FOOD COLORING JEEZE PEOPLE!!!!! No really, we do try to use all of the proper coolants and damn are there a lot of them.
  4. Just yesterday A gal came in with her girl friend and baby in the car for a check engine light diagnosis and the front brakes were metal to metal and they thought I was the ass hole buy not releasing it back to them. It was fix the brakes or tow it home. "Well my husband does all my work," is what she said. So it was towed home, and there is a nice signed and printed name next to notes that say they understand whats going on and we are not responsible if they drive it and crash and die or kill someone else.
  5. I wish winter would slow down, For us we have winterizations and auto starts up until it hits -20 then once -20 is here its all power steering lines, pumps belts and cars that wont start until end of February. We are in the middle of our slow time with school starting soon and everyone making last minute trips and going to the fair there isn't a lot of money to spend on your vehicle. here in about 2 weeks though we are going to be sleeping at the shop.
  6. HAHA I may be only 27 but I grew up watching dragnet.
  7. I hear you there Construction land and heat are ridiculous where we live.
  8. I tell basic head job customers it takes about 2 weeks for us to get all of the parts and get stuff back and forth to the machine shop and test drive about 100 miles with 5 cool downs. 3 days just isnt realistic.
  9. Close with Technet, they pay up to 50 per hour what they want to pay for labor times, no fluids or alignments and up to 1 year but we provide a 2 year warranty. after the 1st year we do it for free.
  10. Dude, corvette is a young man's car now... All of my friends say I just hit my midlife crisis because I Bought a 2008 z06 vett and a 2011 CTS-V this year.
  11. I use carquest filters and carquest has supplied me with a book or I can look at their website.
  12. Please keep us informed Joe, I am starting to have more parts problems since the change over from carquest to advanced. Also we are having problems with the warranty process, how come the original installer can only be reimbursed for up to 1 year but if another shop takes care of a warranty concern they are reimbursed with in a 2 year window? I have reached out to my TechNet reps and never hear anything in return. Do you have any contacts that would talk to me and answer any questions that I may have?
  13. It cant be that bad to get rotary lifts there in Hawaii I was able to get Rotary Shock waves up to alaska for 2200 bucks for 3 twin posts and 1 rotary Y lift. The shockwaves were also only 5300 each I think. But I dont think those will work with your ceiling height. mohawk makes a lift thats maybe 7 feet without a cross beam for low ceilings.
  14. I think Xrac Posted a source online a while back and had good luck with it.
  15. it's personal finances. My busy times are 5 days after the 1st and 15th because that's when the military is paid. The first of the month is when the banks want their money, and the end of the month is when you get yours.
  16. oh man I am going to go buy some now because the interwebs told me to.
  17. I dont have any techs yet, but my plan was to make a bay 1 Mon-wed-fri clean balancer Bay 2 tues-thurs clean balancer bay 3 clean tire machine mon-wed-fri bay 4 clean tire machine tues-thurs. This way if everything just gets wiped down once a day it will never take a hour to clean a slimy piece of equipment.
  18. If you already have all of your equipment and your ready to do work and the 100k is for operating expenses your good to go... here is a quick Idea of start up cost. scan tool snap on modis 6k 1 twin post 6k installed 1 drive on with alignment set up 50k special tools. 10k ac machine 4500 trans flush machine 4500 coolant flush machine 2500 Tire machine and balancer 18k And the list goes on.
  19. Direct injection is starting to make its way in the the independent shops. What are you all doing to remove the carbon build up in the intake chamber? This is something that I do not have much knowledge about but for see it becoming a large service at 50-100k. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS8riAae_bM Here is a good video that explains why and the fixes that are being attempted.
  20. I had to do the same thing.
  21. Try calling them for confirming, its a lot more personal and I have good feedback.
  22. Three weeks ago I got a letter in the mail for my 2005 Cadillac CTS-V for the ignition switch recall and a fuel pump module recall, so I call my local dealer and make an appointment. One and a half hours later they give me a call and tell me that I need two keys to perform the recall. Being that I only had one I tell them to just cut a second key and bill me for it. Their service advisor provides to tell me that it's going to be 54 for the cadillac key or 9 dollars for a regular key and 150 for programing. 150 for programing I ask, yes sir your vehicle has a system called passlock and the key needs to be programed after being cut. She knew who I was and what I do and she still tried to charge me to program a key that doesn't need programed. Just today, I bought a C6 Z06 Corvette in kansas and had it taken to the local dealer for a check up, oil change and what ever else it needed including a few recalls. About 3 hours later I get a call from the advisor telling me that the TPMS needs to be reprogrammed at a cost of 49.95 even though the car didn't have any TPS lights on when it was dropped off. (these cars do reduce performance when you have a bad TPS sensor) So I just told him that was fine Ill take care of it when I get back to Alaska, well he insisted that he will just take care of it for me at no charge so I say thanks and hang up. About 7 min later he calls me back and says that because it requires the use of the Tech2 that he will only charge me 39.95 (this car doesn't require a scan tool). So I decline and tell him Ill just bring the equipment with me to take care of it when I pick up the car at the end of the week. Thats when all hell broke loose and he told me that I didn't know what I was doing. Why is anyone going to the dealers if this is how they are being treated?
  23. BFH bro, give it a good smack on the tail pipe!!
  24. Nate, Like XRAC said you have youth on your side. Trust me I wish I had someone with a bag of money backing me though the addition and expansion that I am going through right now. But at the end of the day when you can sit back and say that I did all of it, I made it happen and it's MINE, thats pretty cool. Dont be afraid to fail, success is even more scary.
