Andrew that is a great story and with a personal desire to be great, like it sounds like you have, will take you farther than you can imagine. I too left the Dealership world for the same reasons and I really loved to fix cars and was/are still really good at it. I see the problem is that a lot of Dealers are so money hungry and they want Techs that Hang High Dollar parts and also charge high Labor. Unfortunately I see a lot of Greed out there from that side of the business and also not much loyalty to the people that make it happen.

Opinion On Pro-Cut Brake Lathe
OEScanTools.com replied to Joe Marconi's topic in Technician Corner - Discussions
Pro-Cut is the Best On-Car Brake Lathe on the market, don't even consider looking at anything else as there is no substitute. This has come from experience and knowledge of today cars and is also proven from the OE Manufacturers. When you have a rotor with built in factory run-out and a hub with built in factory run-out and then meet those two individual pieces together you can get a stacked tolerance than can be excessive. What happens when there is a stacked tolerance and the vehicle is in motion then the high spot of the rotor will contact the brake pad in that area and actually will remove metal in that spot and it will be 180 degrees from the front side of the rotor to the back side of the rotor while the brakes are not applied. These two thin spot gradually get worse and worse over several thousand miles typically between 2500 to 5000 and then you get the dreaded brake pedal pulsation and even steering wheel shake side to side. In the aftermarket we all blame this condition on the following... 1) Over tightened lug nuts 2) Poor Rotor Quality or Thin Rotors 3) Nature of the Vehicle 4) Driver Habits 5) Getting Rotors wet when they are Hot. All of which 99.9% of the time is hog wash. "Rotor Match" all of your Rotors when doing a brake job and charge extra for the service because that is the real issue facing today's brake systems. Also you should be able to do an axle or two rotors in 15 or less, I will guarantee you that getting a Rotor from a parts house takes you a lot more time. Plus why in the world are the majority of Shops now Replacing a Rotor just because they are cheap to replace? Shouldn't you be replacing them when they are under spec? You are fooling yourself if you think that hanging a New Rotor without Rotor Matching it is the Best way to go. Remember whether it is New or Used you should still Match the Rotor to the Hub so that you can take the run-out issue out of the equation. My .02 -
OBD II getting code 89
OEScanTools.com replied to cdhowell's topic in Repair/Diagnostic Help & Tech Tips!
Try unplugging the Clock spring in the steering column for the Air Bag. It is an known issue on these Models that the Clock spring can affect the Ground for the TPS Circuit and it causes all kinds of drivability issues including P0122 & P0123 Codes. I know it sounds stupid but just try it and report back to us and let us know what the outcome is. Thanks -

Alignment Procedures
OEScanTools.com replied to CAautogroup's topic in Repair & Maintenance Services
All great info in this thread. I will share this personal experience on my daughters 2007 Acura TL. I purchased new tires and did the recommended alignment no problem as I wanted to keep the tire wear to a minimum even though I knew that the 16 year old driving this car will curb check the heck out of it. I watched the tech and I was pleased with the time spent on checking it out. They recommended a couple items and we ended up doing camber kits in the back and replacing the compliance bushings in the front. After all of this the tech performed the adjustments and went to reset the steering angle sensor with their newer Hunter Machine. The tech ran into an issue, after he did the relearn the dash was lit up with lights, ABS, Brake, Check Engine, and as few more. Long story short their tool would not perform the relearn. Luckily with the right tool this is about a 5 min fix. I bring this up because 1) You should be selling a steering angle reset diagnostic fee, and 2) You need to be aware that to really perform the service right then having a quality scan tool to perform this is now a reality. Out of curiosity, how many shops here are performing this relearn and charging for it? If you are have you had any issues like what I described? We find that a lot of shops don't do it for a whole list of reasons. Don't let those excuses keep you from doing it right. Merry Christmas everyone, hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday season. Thanks -

Sears Closing 100 US Stores And Auto Centers
OEScanTools.com replied to Joe Marconi's topic in General Automotive Discussion
It is my understanding that they are going through a major restructure to get their Sears Auto Centers separated away from their retail locations. The locations closing are not profitable and typically have been in their location for quite some time. These locations are in not so desirable areas and so thus there needs to be a change. Don't be surprised that in 2 to 3 years that they have increased their locations by 25% or more and in very desireable areas. My .02 OEST- 6 replies

How to Choose the Right Scan Tools for Your Shop
OEScanTools.com posted a blog entry in OEScanTools.com's Blog
The world of diagnostic scan tools can be a challenge to understand what you should have in your shop. These tools can be purchased from a long list of automotive suppliers including parts houses, mobile tool dealers, online tool companies, and many more. Not only are there multiple places to purchase this diagnostic equipment but there are also multiple brand names of aftermarket scan tools. The all-in-one scan tool concept historically speaking has been the only answer for aftermarket repair shops as generally these tools will communicate to a broad range of makes from USA, Asian, & European. The down side to ALL aftermarket scan tools is the hit and miss or limited software content outside of the Engine & Transmission. This makes it extremely challenging to finish the repairs on ignition lock repairs, air bag replacements, Instrument panel replacements, etc... There are also times where in the Engine side a throttle body replacement is needed and the idle air relearn is simply not in your aftermarket scan tool, especially on European models. Steps you should take so that you don't get caught making a bad purchase decision? 1) Don't let the Marketing efforts of a company be the reason you purchase, look at the total package from Tool to Support. 2) Talk to more than one shop about what they use and why, reason is every shops capabilities are different. 3) Don't look at only the price, sure everyone doesn't want to overpay but service after the sale is everything. 4) Repair info in scan tools is typically basic and becomes out dated quickly. Also aftermarket companies that offer repair information can be confusing and also generic. This can sometimes lead to issues when the information provided doesn't match the tool you are using. Analyzing your current scan tool offering and what is a good first line of attack? 1) A High quality general purpose to specialty aftermarket scan tool - Must be quick, easy, and dependable in most situations. 2) A OE Scan Tool based by car count to justify the expense. We usually start with the Big 3 USA Automakers, Big 3 Asian, then European. 3) A J2534 device and a computer built for automotive shops. This would be a rugged Laptop with a partitioned hard drive for multiple car makes and no virus protection plus enough power to be quick and reliable for years to come. Remember this computer is for automotive repair not an ebay or Amazon machine. Who should I align myself with to help my shop be the best it can be in the Diagnostic arena? 1) Just like when a customer is looking for a shop to work on their car when a shop is looking for a supplier to purchase their diagnostic scan tools they should be looking for someone who really understands the tools and their capabilities. Also the supplier needs to have aggresively good technical support so that the shop can get full benefit of the scan tool. 2) Look for a supplier that offers the best aftermarket scan tools and also factory oe scan tools. We will never see an all-in-one scan tool be able to do every function, relearn, & reinitialization so having a factory OE scan tool bridges this gap for the shop. 3) Shops need to understand that even manufacturers of tools don't understand how to repair cars. Their engineers are challenged to do one thing typically and that is to write code inside of a tool to populate and poll data plus actuate any components that are available. This is far from understanding how to repair the car, so aligning yourself with a supplier who does understand how is instrumental in getting the most out of your tools. This is just a broad overview of what to look for... Questions and comments welcomed and encouraged! Thanks OEST-

Ford Sues Autel For Hacking, Copying Database
OEScanTools.com replied to Bradley's topic in Automotive Shop Tools & Equipment
Some food for thought... So is it actually Ford upset over this or the company that Ford used to produce the VCMII. I will give you one guess who that is and why they are really upset. Clue #1: In the aftermarket their Tools are green and they recently purchased another company for their three letter name.
