I would like some feedback from those who have been using BG products. Which ones should I start out with? Which ones are you using the most of? I have a customer who is bringing their car in for 45K service and it says "install BG service kit".

We do coolant, trans, power steering, differentials and transfer case. We sell coolant & transmission more often than the other flushes because customers have been informed more about them in the past. Power steering is really a profitable item because of the time it takes, 10 minutes or less in most cases. But, it does take some training of your customer to make the sale. Generally we add on a flush whenever a system is drained. Our customer's generally won't question a price when you tell them about the added service you are providing. Example: water pump with a coolant flush $xxx.

I agree with you Joe. One thing we try to do is set ourself apart from our competition. BG helps in most cases because of the protection plan. Some shops only sell the product when asked to do a flush. Our sales are from a maintenance view...same as oil change. When we incorporate them into a repair job that is what helps distinguish me from the guy next door. The quality of the service and product. Same as comparing a McD's hamburger to a Applebees burger. Big price difference, but you are there for the service and quality.

BG Products: BG 44K, BG Super Charge 2, BG 244 Diesel, BG MOA, BG CF5

BG MOA, motor oil additive, will stabilize the viscosity of your oil thru modern chemistry, it is not a thickener. MOA will keep oil from foaming at high rpm and will give it thermal stability. MOA is a real good idea if you still use petroleum engine oils, drive hard or use extended oil change intervals with synthetic oils.

      It always amazes me when I hear about a technician who quits one repair shop to go work at another shop for less money. I know you have heard of this too, and you’ve probably asked yourself, “Can this be true? And Why?” The answer rests within the culture of the company. More specifically, the boss, manager, or a toxic work environment literally pushed the technician out the door.
      While money and benefits tend to attract people to a company, it won’t keep them there. When a technician begins to look over the fence for greener grass, that is usually a sign that something is wrong within the workplace. It also means that his or her heart is probably already gone. If the issue is not resolved, no amount of money will keep that technician for the long term. The heart is always the first to leave. The last thing that leaves is the technician’s toolbox.
      Shop owners: Focus more on employee retention than acquisition. This is not to say that you should not be constantly recruiting. You should. What it does means is that once you hire someone, your job isn’t over, that’s when it begins. Get to know your technicians. Build strong relationships. Have frequent one-on-ones. Engage in meaningful conversation. Find what truly motivates your technicians. You may be surprised that while money is a motivator, it’s usually not the prime motivator.
      One last thing; the cost of technician turnover can be financially devastating. It also affects shop morale. Do all you can to create a workplace where technicians feel they are respected, recognized, and know that their work contributes to the overall success of the company. This will lead to improved morale and team spirit. Remember, when you see a technician’s toolbox rolling out of the bay on its way to another shop, the heart was most likely gone long before that.
